VietShrimp Aquaculture Fair 2024 opens to address challenges in shrimp industry

The VietShrimp Aquaculture International Fair 2024, under the theme "In company with shrimp farmers," commenced in Ca Mau, Vietnam's southernmost province, to address challenges in the shrimp industry, Vietnam Plus reported.

Organized by the Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries, the Vietnam Fisheries Society (VINAFIS), the Vietnam Fisheries magazine, and Ca Mau province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the two-day event features approximately 200 booths showcasing the offerings of 150 domestic and international exhibitors.

Included in the fair are four seminars focusing on technology transfer to bolster the circular economy in Vietnam's shrimp value chain, sustainable shrimp industry practices, quality enhancement for Vietnam's shrimp industry, and discussions on optimising shrimp farming efficiency.

VINAFIS chairman Nguyen Viet Thang highlighted shrimp as a pivotal product for Vietnam, generating nearly US$4 billion annually from exports, constituting about 45-50% of the total aquatic export value.

Despite its status as one of the world's leading shrimp-producing countries, alongside Ecuador, India, and Indonesia, Vietnam faced challenges in 2023, witnessing a decline in shrimp export turnover to US$3.45 billion, down 19.8% from 2022.

The industry anticipates continued challenges in 2024, including adverse weather conditions, escalating input costs, disease risks, inflation, and logistical expenses.

Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien emphasised the fair's role in showcasing Vietnamese seafood potential and facilitating discussions among stakeholders to address industry challenges and promote sustainable development.

Ca Mau provincial People's Committee Vice Chairman Le Van Su underscored the critical role of shrimp in the province's agricultural sector, noting opportunities provided by VietShrimp 2024 to enhance shrimp production, processing, and exports in the region.
