Belize Poultry Association says rising fuel prices should not be used to price gouge
The Belize Poultry Association (BPA) said the small price increase in poultry products caused by rising fuel prices and the economic impact on commodities from Russia's invasion into Ukraine should not be used to price gouge, Loop News reported.
Armando Cowo, BPA manager, said there was price gouging in the last adjustment when the cost per pound of chicken increased by BZD 0.08 (~US$0.04; BZD 1 = US$0.50)
Cowo said input prices for raising and selling chicken has gone up, caused by soaring prices of fuel, fertilisers, and energy.
He said about possible price gouging that even though CPA is conducting the adjustment to prices, people should not be price gouged by others who purchase meat in bulk and sell in retail, then in turn sell to consumers at higher prices.
Cowo said they had hoped to adjust prices downwards and urged consumers to be patient as they are trying to save the poultry industry.
