Australian Pig Producers Welcomes EU Subsidies Decision

The Queensland Pork Producers group has welcomed the European Union's decision to lift its export subsidies on uncooked pigmeat.

But the group's president, Paul Taylor, says relief will be short-lived for farmers who have been doing it tough for several years.

He says the industry's main concern is battling record levels of subsidised pigmeat coming into Australia.

"For the period leading up to December this year there was an increase of 45 per cent on the amount of imports coming in," he said.

"At the same time, because of the strength of the Australian dollar, our exports were down 25 per cent so the actual returns that pig farmers have been receiving have been well below the cost of production."
