China mulls US$50-million Kuril fish plant

Donggang Daping Enterprise Group is in talks with the Yuzhno-Kurilsk local management to fund US$50 million in facilities for catching and reprocessing fish in Russia's Kuril Islands, the town's head Oleg Gusev said Thursday (Mar 22).

Donggang Daping Enterprise Group is a Chinese seafood producer.

"The Chinese businessmen are ready to use 10 fishing vessels to produce aquatic bioresources, build a fish processing plant with capacity of about 2,000 tonnes of fish per year on Kunashir Island and build refrigerator capacities," Gusev told RIA Novosti.

The Chinese company also wants to grow marine molluscs in Yuzhno-Kurilsk, the largest settlement on Kunashir Island in the Kuril Island group.

Donggang Daping Enterprise Group is a private company with a fleet of 40 fishing and transport vessels. It also owns a fish processing plant with berthing facilities and exports its products to South Korea and Japan.
