US beef imports now allowed in Egypt

All imports of US beef and beef products from animals less than 30 months of age would be allowed back into Egypt, provided their age and origins meet the requirements.

US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said that they were extremely pleased at the reopening of another important market for US beef exports and anticipate that exports would quickly return to pre-BSE trade levels.

He added that USDA would continue its efforts in promoting the use of science-based regulations in the global trade in beef.

Before the ban in 2003, Egyptian purchases of US beef and beef products amounted to $30 million.
