Japan Set To Increase British Pork Imports

Japan will increase its imports of British pork following the success of a British Pig Executive (BPEX) stand at the major Foodex show.

This was a follow-on from the two highly successful mission mounted by BPEX which were instrumental in re-opening the huge Japanese market to top quality British pig meat.

Four major pig meat exporters were represented on the BPEX stand, including one of Great Britain's largest organic pig meat producers.

The stand was manned by Meat and Livestock Commission Pig Meat Export Marketing Manager Bent Windahl who said, "We had important visitors from the major Japanese trading houses on the stand.

"They said their talks on buying British of pig meat and offal had been both positive and fruitful.

"Inquiries were also taken from countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China and even some African countries."

To tempt people on to the stand organic pork sausages and bacon were cooked up and given out as tasting samples.

Adam Crouch from Cranswick Country Foods said afterwards it had been a highly rewarding visit and he appreciated the excellent support given.

David Anderson of the Trans Oceanic Meat Company Ltd said: "The show was a complete success as far as I am concerned. I returned with confirmed business which I certainly did not anticipate."
