Australian council rejects Cargill's grain expansion

The Buloke Shire Council in Australia has refused to allow the grain handler Cargill to expand its grain receival site at Charlton.

The company had applied last year to upgrade the site but it was met with objections from nearby residents.

Mayor David Pollard says the company did not respond to several attempts to organise a meeting to resolve the issue.

He says the council is disappointed with the way the company has handled the issue.

Councillor Pollard says while the council has refused to grant a permit to the company this time, he is hoping Cargill will reapply soon.

"We're hoping they come back to renew the permit but realistically we've got to get on top, there are questions that the local community require answering and if [we] can get on top of that, there's no reason why the storage site can't go ahead," he said.
