Ukraine meat imports could decrease by 3.4 percent

Meat imports to Ukraine will decrease by 3.4 percent to 200,000 tonnes in 2008 year-on-year, according to Vitaliy Pakholiuk, official of Ministry of Agricultural Policy.

The meat import volumes include 150,000 tonnes of beef and 50,000 tonnes of pork.

Pakholiuk said meat producers have informed the ministry's representatives that their pork requirement may exceed the forecasted volumes in 2008 whereas beef requirement may fall short of it.

However, the ministry forecasts that Ukraine would be able to fully supply its market with domestic produce without having to resort to imports.
