Pakistan poultry farmers threaten strike

Pakistan's Rawalpindi Poultry Association has threatened to go on strike for an indefinite time if their demands including action against poultry mafia are not met.

The office-bearers of Rawalpindi Poultry Association on Wednesday (Mar 17) held a rally against poultry mafia involved in selling chicken at high rates, at Murree Road.

Addressing the rally, president of Rawalpindi Poultry Association Raja Munir, vice president Raja Talib and general secretary Waqas Abbasi have demanded the government to take action against poultry mafia to mitigate the suffering of people, who are bound to take chicken on high rates in Rawalpindi.

They said that the poultry mafia is charging PKR72 (US$0.85) per chick and they are making 600% profit, which is why the general public is being fleeced.

People involved in poultry mafia have captured the industry and this is the reason for high rates of poultry items, they added.

They warned that they would go on indefinite strike if actions were not taken against such elements.
