Ukraine's 2005 grain harvest seen at 38-40 million tonnes

Ukraine is likely to harvest 38-40 million tonnes of grain in 2005, judging by the state of the winter grains and prospects for spring planting, the analyst Ukragroconsult said in a report Thursday.

A previous estimate by the APK-Inform analyst forecast the grain harvest this year of 37.6 million tonnes.

The Ukragroconsult report said wheat exports in 2005-2006 were likely to increase to four million tonnes from 3.2 million tonnes in the 2005-2005 marketing year.

At the same time the export of barley would fall to 3.5 million tonnes from 4.2 million tonnes in the previous marketing year.

Total grain exports in the 2005-2006 year are forecast at 8-10 million tonnes, compared with estimated exports in the current marketing year of 9.8-10.0 million tonnes.

In 2004 Ukraine harvested 41.72 million tonnes of grain in clean weight, double the previous year's harvest.
