White Spot Syndrome Virus outbreak confirmed in shrimp farms in Kochi, India

 

 

A White Spot Syndrome Virus outbreak has been confirmed among 4,000 hectares of shrimp farms in the Ernakulam district of Kochi port city in India, Fish Information & Services reported.

 

Farmers are concerned that the virus could affect harvest during the current season.

 

K X Sebastian, general secretary of Kerala Aqua Farmers' Federation, said the outbreak was detected two weeks ago, with farmers also reporting crop losses of pokkali rice, which is associated with shrimp farming in the in the coastal districts of Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur over the past week.

 

Sebastian said farmers in these areas raise black tiger shrimp with harvests of between 500kg to 800kg per hectare, with increased output of about four times if scientific methods are applied. This has been implemented in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

 

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies has gathered samples of the virus from affected farms and will be investigating the outbreak.
