Lumpy skin disease strikes more than 23,227 animals in Sindh, Pakistan

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) has so far been found in 23,227 animals in Sindh, Pakistan, of which 136 have died, said Sindh Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Abdul Bari Khan Pitafi.

Addressing a press conference at the Sindh Assembly, Pitafi said the disease had affected 16,000 cows in Karachi, and the detection rate in the province was 0.9%.

He added that the federal government was notified of the occurrence of the disease. The Sindh government also requested for permission to import a LSD vaccine, but that was not timely granted.

Hoping that appropriate vaccines would soon reach Pakistan, Pitafi said the Sindh livestock department had requested the Punjab government to provide the Goatpox Vaccine for cattle in the province.

He added that standard operating procedures were also devised for livestock farming, and the municipal commissioners had been directed to start a fumigation campaign against mosquitoes at livestock farms.
