Beef from Germany linked to Salmonella outbreak in Norway

Norwegian officials have traced the source of a Salmonella outbreak to meat from Germany.

Salmonella Enteritidis has been detected in a batch of beef imported from Germany. This batch has been withdrawn from the market. It has been used in the production of ground (minced) meat and burgers.

Folkehelseinstituttet, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, previously reported 20 people were sick. Now, 22 people are known to have fallen ill, with 19 confirmed to have been infected with the outbreak strain. Confirmation is pending for three people.

An outbreak investigation is ongoing involving the industry, local health units, the Veterinary Institute and Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet).

So far, a Salmonella positive sample came from importer Prima Jæren. It was taken at the end of January this year.
