India broiler prices on post-recovery drop
India's broiler prices have dropped after recovery to a profitable level in the first two months of 2013.
It dropped to US$0.83/kg in the middle of March after rising to US$1.47/kg during January - February 2013, according to Dr Gopal Reddy, General Manager of Sales & Marketing for Life Line Feeds, a major broiler integrator in the country's southern state of Karnataka.
"The broiler price drop is a result of falling meat consumption during Lent when Christian refrain from eating meat. Secondly, it's the start of school vacation, and consumption of poultry in schools generally declines," he said. Dr Reddy added that the sudden drop in broiler price signifies that an oversupply of birds still prevails in India.
