Vietnam to stabilise pork prices
The Ministry of Industry and Trade's import-export department urged trade officers to collaborate with pork export associations and companies overseas to add more pork import sources, reported Vietnam Plus.
The ministry said diversifying pork import sources aims to stabilise high domestic market prices impacted by African swine fever.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development projected Vietnam's meat output will hit 5.5 million tonnes in 2020, with 64% to 67% accounted to pork.
Last week, Vietnam Prime Minsuter Nguyen Xuan Phuc called on ministries of agriculture and rural development, industry and trade and finance to safeguard supplies of pork in the country, as well as control pork prices to reasonable levels.
Vietnam's animal health department statistics show that the country imported 65,800 tonnes of meat by end February 2020. From that total, 21% was pork, a 150% increase compared to the same period last year.
Vietnam purchases pork from Canada (33.6%), Germany (25.4%), Brazil (16.1%) and Poland (15.81%).
