Indonesia assures ample fish stocks ahead of Ramadan and Eid

Indonesia has ensured an abundant supply of fish to meet the public demand during this year's Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, stated the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry in Jakarta, Antara reported.

Official data reveals that the country anticipates producing 3.10 million tonnes of fish during the March–April period, whereas the projected demand stands at 2.46 million tonnes for the same duration.

Budi Sulistyo, director-general for the strengthening of the competitiveness of marine and fishery products at the ministry, said according to estimations, fish demand is set to rise by 10% during Ramadan and by 20% during Eid.

Sulistyo highlighted the heightened enthusiasm among people for fish consumption during the Islamic holy month, emphasising its affordability, ease of cooking, nutritional benefits, and widespread availability in Indonesian markets.

Providing insights from data collected by his office at approximately 200 warehouses, Sulistyo noted a surge in supply and a decrease in prices in early January.

He said that frozen warehouses are stocked with various fish types, including mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna, channa, decapterus, squid, snapper, skipjack tuna, and milkfish.
