Indian groups in UK seek for stricter meat sourcing rules

In the wake of the European horsemeat issue, which has gripped the industry and is still under investigation, Hindu groups in the UK have called for stricter rules to enforce the clarity of meat sources.

According to the UK-based Hindu groups, it has been revealed that many Indian restaurants operating in Scotland have been using the wrong kind of meat. More than a third of Indian eateries in Scotland could be using cheaper meat, such as beef, instead of lamb, they said.

Managing director of Hindu Council UK Anil Bhanot said the issues raised religious concerns, as those Hindus who eat meat would prefer not to consume beef, as cows are considered sacred in their religion.
