Australian agriculture associations collaborate on biosecurity preparedness for feedlot industry

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and the Australian Lot Feeders' Association (ALFA) have joined forces to bolster biosecurity preparedness against exotic animal disease (EAD) threats, Meat & Livestock Australia reported.

This collaboration involves the appointment of a biosecurity manager for Australian lot feeders and the provision of essential tools to equip the industry to respond effectively to potential incursions.

Barb Madden, president of ALFA, emphasised that the primary focus of the newly funded position, ‘Manager – Feedlot Biosecurity', is to fulfil the five objectives outlined in the ALFA EAD Biosecurity project. Rachael O'Brien has been selected for this role and will spearhead the development of various tools designed to assist Australian feedlot enterprises in safeguarding their businesses during an EAD incursion.

Barb said the tools will encompass templates and guides aimed at enhancing biosecurity practices to effectively manage animal health within feedlots amidst an EAD response.

The biosecurity manager will embark on physical visits to lot feeding regions, facilitating workshops and extension days covering pre and post EAD tools and resources. Additionally, close collaboration with feedlots will enable the practical application of these tools, fostering EAD capacity and confidence among individual feedlot operators.

In response to the necessity for more accessible biosecurity resources, particularly for regionally located feedlots across Australia, the new role endeavours to raise awareness of existing and new frameworks governing EAD incursions. This includes elucidating the roles of governments and peak industry councils in decision-making processes.

Barb said they aim to enhance awareness within the feedlot industry regarding available tools and the supportive infrastructure accessible to individuals and businesses.

ALFA remains committed to identifying opportunities to bridge gaps in EAD preparedness, fortifying the feedlot industry against potential incursions.
