China relaxes swine farming environmental requirements

China's environmental ministry has eased environmental registration requirements for the swine industry and lifted a ban on 14,000 areas for swine farming, reported Reuters.

Liu Zhiquan, the environmental ministry's director of environmental impact assessment said environment protection is not a crutch to be used to stop swine breeding.

Lui comments come as China seeks to increase swine production following the African swine fever outbreak in the country, which has decimated more than 40% of its swine herd.

China has approved more import sources overseas and imposed new measures to boost domestic swine production to supplement dwindling domestic pork supplies.
