Vietnam calls for solutions to fight domestic cattle and poultry diseases

Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed a directive to implement radical solutions to combat cattle and poultry diseases in the country, reported Vietnam Plus.

According to the signed Directive No. 12/CT-TTg, provinces hit with avian influenza, African swine fever (ASF) and foot-and-mouth disease must assign resources to halt the further spread of these diseases.

Prime Minister Nguyen called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to work together with other government ministries, agencies and localities to restore swine herds and prevent another outbreak of ASF.

As part of the directive, these areas must publicly announce if the diseases are at risk of spreading, with vaccination provided to quarantine disease hotspots.

Other provinces which are free from the diseases are to inform farmers about precautionary measures to prevent an outbreak of disease and allocate vaccination.

Prime Minister Nguyen also mentioned other measures to halt the spread of livestock disease in the country, which includes improved wholesale market management, early diagnosis of H5N1 and 5N6 suspected incidents, stringent management of illegal transportation and animal consumption (such as animal products sourced from unknown origins) as well as strengthening communication efforts.

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported 34 H5N1 and H5N6 outbreak in 10 cities and provinces in Vietnam. More than 100,000 poultry have been culled to stop the spread of the virus.

The ASF outbreak in Vietnam has caused trillions of VND in losses, while 100 cases of foot-and-mouth disease have found in nine cities and provinces. Hundreds of cattle have been killed due to the disease.
