Germany releases result of an EU-launched salmonella monitoring program
The EU has launched a salmonella-monitoring programme and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has carried out two salmonella studies on German fattening pigs and poultry in accordance.
Samples of 300 broilers and 98 breeders were taken, and returned results indicated that 10.3 percent of the tested broilers showed signs of salmonella, while breeders are free of the bacteria.
The results have showed that protection from salmonella must start at the breeding and fattening stages, said Professor Andreas Hensel, president of the German institute.
Results from all participating countries will be collected and the EU will proceed to draw up campaigns for salmonella reduction in fattening pigs and chickens.
