Hong Kong, China, suspends poultry imports from affected areas in Denmark and Sweden

The Centre for Food Safety of Hong Kong, China, has told the trade to halt certain poultry imports from affected areas in Denmark and Sweden.

The move follows reports of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Lolland Municipality and Torsås Municipality.

The same measure also covers specific districts in Germany and Poland linked to H5N1 reports.

In Germany, the areas named are Leer, Schaumburg and Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony.

Hong Kong imported about 450 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 210,000 eggs from Denmark last year. It imported about 30 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Sweden.

The CFS said the suspensions take effect immediately and are intended to protect public health. It also said it has contacted relevant authorities and will monitor updates from WOAH and national agencies.
