Vietnam's Pangasius sector aims to reach US$1.6 billion worth in exports in 2022
Nhu Van Can, Vietnam's Director of the Aquaculture Department, Directorate of Fisheries said the country's pangasius industry is expected to produce about 1.6 to 1.7 million tonnes of commercial pangasius, with an expected export turnover of over US$1.6 billion this year, Fish Information & Services reported.
He said this at a conference organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Hanoi.
To Thi Tuong Lan, deputy general secretary of the Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said the export value of pangasius is expected to increase by 20% to 25%.
The market price for pangasius in the US is as high as US$3.95 per kg, while prices in China are also rising. Vietnam's export of the fish has increased in China (31%), the US (23%), countries under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (13%) and the EU (6.6%).
Local prices for raw pangasius is about VND 30,000 (~US$1.31; VND 10,000 = US$0.44) while the distribution price of frozen pangasius fillets to the US has increased to US$8 to US$8.5 per kg.
Pangasius aquaculture farms in the Mekong Delta last year was 5,856.7 hectares, a 10% increase year-on-year, with the An Giang, Dong Thap, Long An, and Ben Tre localities the most concentrated stocking areas.
Last year's Pangasius harvest in Vietnam was 1.525 million tonnes, 1.63% higher year-on-year.
