US seafood company to farm salmon in Chile

Icicle Seafoods Inc., one of the top processors of wild Alaska salmon, is investing in a salmon-farming business in Chile.

The Seattle-based company announced Wednesday (Mar 7) it has formed a partnership with Pablo Baraona called Salmones Aysen to produce farm-raised salmon and trout in southern Chile. Icicle Seafoods has shared a 15-year relationship with the company.

Chile's salmon production is rivaling that of global leader Norway. The country is supplying almost 60 percent of the salmon consumed in the US.

Although the investment may disappoint partners in Alaska, Icicle president Don Giles said the company is equally committed to its Alaskan operations--the company recently bought two salmon-processing plant in the state.
