Xiamen accounts for 60 percent of young shrimp market in China

By the end of 2006, there were 415 shrimp hatcheries in the city, producing about 60 percent of the nation's young saltwater shrmp (nauplii and postlarval), according to the Xiamen Fisheries Department.

The hatcheries cultivate shrimps from various species. Only three farms are cultivating freshwater shrimps while the rest were saltwater farms. In 2006, these farms produced about 364.3 billion young shrimps worth an estimated RMB 361 million (US$46.6 million).
