Canada agriculture minister admits crisis in Canadian hog industry

Canada's federal agriculture minister Chuck Strahl admitted on Sunday (March 4) that the country is reeling from an "almost perfect storm of problems" due to the appreciation of Canadian dollar and increasing production costs.

Other problems such as chronic wasting disease and the market's shift from fresh meat to processed meat have also contributed to the problem, said Strahl.

Strahl said all of these things are happening almost at the same time which is causing transitional problems in the pork industry.

The agriculture chief said he has formed a small working group with the Canadian Pork Council to discuss what can be done.

Strahl noted some problems are cyclical and may be hard to address but the support of the Canadian Pork Council can result to specific things that can help the pork industry which he stressed is "clearly in trouble".
