Myanmar to systematically boost veterinary vaccine production

Myanmar's Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, Dr Aung Gyi, unveiled plans on to enhance veterinary vaccine production systematically in the country, utilising dedicated experimental animal units funded by the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC), Xinhua reported.

At a ceremony in Yangon, two experimental animal units, supported by the LMC special fund 2021, were inaugurated at Myanmar's Livestock, Breeding, and Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation.

According to Dr Aung Gyi, the Livestock, Breeding, and Veterinary Department, responsible for producing vaccines for cattle, goats, sheep, and swine, will utilise the test animals in these units to meticulously assess vaccine efficacy.

Furthermore, Dr Aung Gyi emphasised the benefits for animal breeders, noting that vaccinating animals can significantly reduce disease incidence.

Dr Min Thein Maw, Director of Myanmar's Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, highlighted the project's objectives of exchanging vaccine production technologies and developing essential infrastructures.

Through the construction of experimental animal units with LMC support, Myanmar aims to raise animals such as mice, guinea pigs, and goats under optimal biosecurity conditions. This approach ensures the quality of vaccines is enhanced through safe and ethical testing procedures.

Dr Aung Gyi revealed that Myanmar's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation have received a total of 31 LMC-funded projects thus far, underscoring the country's commitment to advancing agricultural and veterinary capabilities through international cooperation.
