Philippines Agriculture Department applauds FAO's support for aquaculture industry

 
 


The Philippines Department of Agriculture (DA) expressed appreciation for the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for its efforts to enhance the country's aquaculture sector, Philippine News Agency reported.

 

The country's Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr met with FAO Director-General Quo Dongyu, who recognised aquaculture as a "promising industry" in the Philippines, highlighting its potential to contribute to food security and economic goals.

 

They met at a bilateral meeting during the sidelines of the High-level Ministerial Session of the 37th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

 

Tiu Laurel praised the FAO's initiatives and support in the Philippines, emphasising the importance of a robust FAO Country Office in the Philippines, backed by the full support of the FAO headquarters.

 

Furthermore, Tiu Laurel engaged in discussions with Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence McAulay, exploring potential partnerships in the agri-fishery sector.

 

During their meeting, the leaders explored avenues to enhance livestock production through genetic advancements, modernisation initiatives, and support for farmers and fishers, reflecting ongoing efforts to bolster agricultural resilience and productivity in the Philippines.
