BRF and Aleph Farms sign MoU to bring cultivated meat to Brazil

Major Brazilian meatpacker BRF SA and Aleph Farms signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-develop and produce cultivated meat using Aleph's patented production platforms (BioFarm) for distribution in Brazil.

The new product line aims to boost BRF's supply chain, reduce its environmental impact, and diversify the company's product line.

Didier Toubia, co-founder and CEO of Aleph Farms, said the new partnership advances Aleph Farms' strategy to integrate into the existing ecosystem as part of our go-to-market plans, adding that leveraging on BRF's expertise and infrastructure will drive a faster scale-up of cultivated meat and lead to a broader positive impact.

Lorival Luz, CEO of BRF, said the company will play a leading role in this food revolution as there an increasing global demand for new sources of protein. The partnership with Aleph is part of BRF's 2030 Vision strategy.

Sergio Pinto, director of innovation at BRF, said the new offering provides an alternative to consumers while optimising efficiency and reducing the strain on the production chain.

Aleph's BioFram technology platform is able to produce cell-cultivated meat. The company had announced an MoU with Mitsubishi for the Japan market in January, and produced the first cultivated and 3D bio-printed ribeye steak last month.
