China reports  FMD outbreak among pigs and cattle
 
 

China's veterinary authorities have reported foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks in Guangdong and Tibet.

 

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received notifications on March 1, 2013.

 

Pigs were first found infected on 18 February 2013, and the presence of the FMD virus (serotype O) was confirmed on 27 February. In the case of cattle, the outbreak was first observed on 19 February, and confirmed on February 21.

 

A total of 948 pigs were found susceptible, out of which 88 cases were reported. All 948 pigs were destroyed.

 

Out of 37 susceptible cattle, 13 cases were reported. All 37 animals were destroyed.

 

The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive. Several control measures have been applied to contain the situation.
