US egg production rises in January 2024, USDA reports

The US witnessed an uptick in egg production in January 2024, according to data released by the USDA, Brownfield Ag News reported.

Production reached 9.274 billion eggs, marking a 2% increase compared to January 2023, with both table and hatching eggs surpassing the previous year's figures.

On February 1st, the number of egg-laying hens saw a slight uptick, while the rate of lay per day rose by 2%, indicating improved productivity among poultry.

The hatching of egg-type chicks saw a notable increase of 3%, with placements of pullets for future hatchery supply flocks rising by 5%. This suggests a forthcoming larger supply of eggs in the upcoming weeks.

Conversely, the hatching of broiler-type chicks experienced a modest decrease, and placements of pullets for future broiler hatchery supplies dropped by 9%, indicating a potential decline in chicken supplies for consumption later this year.

The USDA is set to release its next annual poultry and egg production projections on March 8, 2024.
