China saw 39% rise on-year in rapeseed exports during Jan 2013

China saw a rise in rapeseed imports in January, despite industry estimates that imports will drop in 2013.

In January 2013, China imported 382,000 tonnes of rapeseed, up 75% compared to 218,000 tonnes a month ago, and a rise of 39% compared to 274,000 tonnes in January 2012.

During the first eight months (June 2012 - January 2013) of 2012/13, imports reached 2.11 million tonnes, up 111% compared to one million tonnes during the same period in 2011/12.

China's rapeseed and soy crushers have been raising meal prices after the Chinese lunar New Year due to low stocks and rising rapeseed import prices.

Feed mills, concerned over potential supply shortage, have started booking orders ahead of the March purchasing season. Canada is currently the dominant supplier, supplying more than 98% of rapeseed to China. However, China may resume canola trade with Australia to add another source of supply.
