Azerbaijan confirms H5N1 strain on poultry farm
The bird flu outbreak found this week on a poultry farm in Azerbaijan has turned out to be of the H5N1 strain, said a veterinary official on Mar 2.
This is the first time the virus has spread to commercial flocks in Azerbaijan. Authorities placed the poultry farm under quarantine on Feb 27 and have cleared the farm of dead poultry.
Confirming that the virus detected in the outbreak is the H5N1 strain, Emin Shahbazov, deputy head of the state veterinary service said the authorities are taking all measures needed to prevent the virus from spreading.
The first report of the H5N1 strain in Azerbaijan was detected in wild birds last month. So far, no human cases of the bird flu have been reported in Azerbaijan.
