Hong Kong pork supply disrupted due to COVID-19 outbreak in slaughterhouses
Hong Kong's fresh pork supply has been disrupted after slaughterhouses in the Sheung Sui and Tsuen Wan areas were forced to closed temporarily after workers there tested positive for COVID-19, The Standard Hong Kong reported.
The Tsuen Wan Slaughterhouse was reopened after cleaning and disinfection, but was operating under a limited slaughtering capacity. The Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse remain closed.
183 out of the 866 staff from the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse tested positive for COVID-19, which includes slaughterhouse staff, buyers, and importers.
Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said only 293 live swine were supplied to markets, and no live swine were imported from mainland China.
Hui Wai-kin, Hong Kong's Pork Traders General Association said only a few districts have fresh pork supply and higher prices of pork are to be expected. The sector hopes that the Sheung Shui slaughterhouse will reopen one production line, which can slaughter up to 1,800 swine.
