Skretting, Chilean salmon company enter agreement concerning sustainability targets

Skretting Chile and Chilean salmon farming company Salmones Camanchaca have entered into an agreement that sets sustainability targets in relation to carbon emissions, sourcing of raw materials, renewable energy use and life-cycle assessment analysis.

BioMar has also signed up to the sustainability targets.

The agreement reflects a joint commitment towards a more sustainable industry, with the common goal of reducing the environmental impact of the whole value chain.

Ronald Barlow, managing director of Skretting Chile, said: "Our operations follow internal processes that aim to reduce the use of water and fuel, as well as reducing and reutilising plastic and pallets. We also monitor our CO2 and carbon footprint emissions, two indicators that we periodically report to our headquarters in Norway.

"We are making a significant investment in this area during 2021, that will allow us to optimise the use of thermal energy from alternative sources. All these initiatives have the goal of reducing our environmental footprint, demonstrating our commitment and our role in the global aquaculture supply chain."

Alfredo Tello, Salmones Camanchaca's sustainability manager, said: "Feed production is a significant component of the environmental and social footprint of salmon farming, due to the diverse number of raw materials and supply chains involved in its manufacturing. In order to actively contribute to the sustainable development of salmon farming, it is essential to work in an alliance with our feed providers, and this commitment is a big step in that direction."

"We are committed to contributing to the sustainability goals of each of our customers," said Trygve Berg Lea, global sustainability director at Skretting. "Through our parent company Nutreco, Skretting has committed to establish Science Based Targets worldwide, including emission reduction. To this, we can also add the recent agreement signed by Skretting Chile towards 100% renewable energy supply, as well as other initiatives related to health and welfare, climate, circularity and good citizenship. These initiatives allow us to support Camanchaca's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2025."
