Denmark's pig sector cuts antibiotics usage by 19%
The Danish pig industry managed to cut down the usage of antibiotics by 19% last year, as compared to 2010.
Total volume decreased from 100.3 tonnes to 81.4 tonnes, Vetstat figures revealed. Vetstat is responsible for monitoring the usage of antibiotics in Denmark.
The decrease has pleased the Danish industry, as the reduction figures were reached despite a strong growth in pig numbers. The so-called 'yellow card system' was one reason for the 2011 success. This system provides in extra surveillance when pig farmers have a high usage of antibiotics.
