Peru fish exports up 19.5%

Peruvian exports of frozen trout and tilapia grew 19.5% in 2009, in spite of the global crisis.

Canadian demand for frozen trout grew 82.9% while Norway rose 32.8%. Shipments of frozen tilapia to the US also soared 151.4%.

Higher global demand of trout and salmon by Russia, France and the US would likely favour a higher production of trout, while salmon price could increase.

The Ministry of Production (Produce) is trying to offer a boost to the aquaculture industry through the National Plan for Aquaculture Development, while leveraging the great potential this activity has in Peru. The initiative aims to develop aquaculture sustainably between 2010 and 2021.
