Kansas beef producer named to beef checkoff committee
Kansas beef producer Andrew Murphy has been named to a one-year term on the Beef Promotion and Operating Committee (BPOC).
The committee will make final budget allocations for 2009 national beef checkoff programmes.
Murphy is the chief operating officer for Innovative Livestock Services, a custom cattle feeding business. He served as chairman of the Kansas Beef Council (KBC) in 2006 and 2007 and is director for the Federation of State Beef Councils.
Murphy was named to the BPOC as one of 10 representatives from the Federation of State Beef Councils, an alliance of the 45 US state beef councils that, by federal law, collect the checkoff dollar.
Beef councils forward 50 cents to the national Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) and retain the other 50 cents for in-state use or to re-invest with the Federation for national beef promotion efforts.
KBC re-invests 65 percent of Kansas' 50 cents with the Federation to benefit national efforts.
Each year the beef checkoff undergoes a producer-driven budget and programme planning process. The BPOC, with 10 Federation members and 10 CBB members, approves the final national plan.
