Ukrainian corn spill in Poland prompts investigation

Authorities in Poland are responding to an incident involving spilled Ukrainian corn near the Kotomierz railway station, which occurred on the night of February 24-25, 2024, Yahoo! News reported.

According to Paweł Bylewski, a representative of the security company overseeing transport security, efforts are underway to collect the spilled corn, with approximately 30 tonnes to be disposed of.

Bylewski revealed that eight out of the 40 carriages carrying the corn were opened, with customs cables cut to gain access to the cargo. This breach resulted in half of the corn spilling onto the ground. The shipment, destined for the port of Gdansk and intended for export to Morocco, saw around 160-180 tonnes of corn spilled, with 30 tonnes remaining at the site.

The spilled corn will undergo collection and weighing procedures at customs, with potential disposal or utilisation for biodiesel production. Despite ongoing efforts, Polish authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators or determine the exact timing of the incident.

In response to the spillage, a criminal case has been initiated under Article 288 of Poland's Criminal Code, addressing the destruction of property. This incident follows previous damage to a Ukrainian freight car carrying beans at the Dorohusk railway station in Poland.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Poland has called for the punishment of those responsible for the spillage and urged Poland to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
