Peru's fish exports returns rise
According to Peru's Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), Peruvian fish exports generated US$188.9 million in revenue during December 2011, which is 25.1% more than the same month in 2010 when its value was US$150.9 million.
The export volume increased by 32.3%, from 77,300 to 102,300 tonnes. This rise was mainly due to higher sales of fishmeal.
According to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by PRODUCE, between January and December 2011, the sale abroad of 1.96 million tonnes generated US$3,160.3 million, while in the same period last year 1.62 million tonnes worth US$2,529.6 million were exported.
Only in December 2011, 64,000 tonnes of fishmeal were exported, 39.4% more than the 45,900 tonnes exported a year earlier. The value of these shipments was US$79.9 million, that is, 22.9% more than the same month in 2010.
Between January and December 2011, 1,292,500 tonnes of fishmeal were exported, 19% more than in 2010.
In December, exports increased foreign sales of fishmeal from around 2011 to a total of US$1,766.6 million, 9.4% more than in 2010.
Meanwhile, crude oil exports totalled 8,100 tonnes last December for US$9.6 million, up 17% over the same month of 2010.
Considering all of 2011, a total of 211,300 tonnes of oil were sold abroad, 9% less than in the previous year. These sales generated US$274.9 million, an amount that represents a rise of 21.1% over 2010.
In December 2011, about 19,400 tonnes of frozen products were exported, volume that accounts for a rise of 8.9%, compared to 17,800 tonnes exported a year earlier.
Throughout the last year, 350,500 tonnes of frozen products were sold overseas, 36.4% more than in 2010.
