China's Guizhou Kang Sheng Da Food has 12 intelligent layer farms with more than 700,000 laying hens altogether.

In 2022, the company installed a big data platform for complete digital intelligent management and standardised operations. The so-called '5G+ layer industry digitalisation' system modernises egg production at Guizhou's farms.

With the system, all layer pens adopted a fully enclosed, 'negative pressure' ventilation and 'zero antibiotics' breeding model. They are equipped with more than 10 temperature sensors. Humidity, temperature, lighting and the feeding time of the pens are automatically controlled.

With modern, advanced applications — such as an artificial intelligence-driven egg counting system connected to the big data platform — in place, Guizhou staff can monitor the production data of the pens in real-time remotely, as well as keep watch on the health status of layer hens.

Automated chicken pens reduce contamination risks caused by personnel entry and exit. Such a pen also needs less manpower; an automated model with 80,000 birds needs only two staff to manage it. This translates to one staff to 40,000 chickens on average.

Intelligent farms also eliminate the need for manual egg collection. Through a central egg collection system, eggs laid by hens can be directly transported from the chicken pen to the sorting centre, packed and boxed on a sorting system, and directly delivered to the market.

By the end of 2023, Guizhou achieved full operation status, with an inventory of one million laying hens and yielding more than 900,000 eggs daily.

Beijing WOD Cheng-Long

Beijing WOD Cheng-Long Biotechnology (WOD Cheng-Long) is one of the three largest poultry breeding companies in the world.

Investing in biotechnology, WOD Group currently has three major business sectors: poultry breeding, chicken food and digital economy. Beijing Yukou Poultry, which focuses on poultry breeding, has created a smart layer platform that relies on modern information technologies such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things, big data analysis and artificial intelligence.

The platform allows farmers to raise chickens at their fingertips, handling thousands of chickens each day. Currently, it serves more than 70,000 farms in 321 cities across 31 Chinese provinces, accounting for more than 70% of the national market.

The platform, which manages 200 million laying hens, can also increase the annual egg production from each chicken by 0.5 kilogrammes.
