US farmers are expected to plant 58 million acres of wheat in 2009, US Department of Agriculture Chief Economist Joseph Glauber said Thursday (February 26) at the annual Agricultural Outlook Forum.

The estimate is below the USDA's baseline projection, released on February 12. In the baseline report, the USDA had estimated 2009-10 wheat area at 60.5 million acres.

The 2009 figure is also below last year, when farmers planted 63.1 million acres of wheat, producing 2.5 billion bushels.
