Australia announces its status as bird flu free
The Australian veterinary authorities reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that decontamination and disinfection were completed on November 21, 2013 and that there have been no further outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks in the country.
Appropriate surveillance has been completed to demonstrate that the event of HPAI has been eradicated.
On February 21, 2014, Australia declared having resumed its status as a country free from bird flu in accordance with Article 10.4.4 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code.
Contact with wild species has been identified as the major cause of the outbreaks.
