EU pork output up in November 2021

Data from the European Union (EU) commission showed that the region produced 2.1 million tonnes of pork in November 2021, 2% up year-on-year with swine slaughter at 22.4 million head or 3% higher year-on-year, the UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) reported.

Spain's output contributed the most to the region's pork production levels, with 494,000 tonnes produced by Spain in November 2021, 7% higher year-on-year. Denmark also saw increased pork production at 169,000 tonnes or 8% up year-on-year.

Germany and Poland recorded declining pork production levels especially in the second half of last year.

Between January 2021 to November 2021, the EU produced 21.4 million tonnes of pork, 2% higher compared to same period in 2020. Swine slaughter was at 228 million head.

Swine prices in the EU have been under pressure due to declining domestic foodservice demand and reduced demand from China. China has been increasing its local pork production and has maintained a ban on German pork imports due to African swine fever.

The EU commission expects the region's pork production to increase this year, with exports projected at 7% higher. Industry analysts said China's pork production will continue recovering in 2022, limiting EU pork exports.
