Vietnam's meat imports rise in volume, decline in value in 2023

Vietnam saw a surge in meat imports, surpassing 716,000 tonnes valued at US$1.43 billion in 2023, according to data from the country's Import and Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Net Global reported.

While the quantity of meat imports increased by 5.4% compared to the previous year, there was a 3.9% decline in value during the same period.

Imports were sourced from over 57 markets, with India emerging as the largest supplier, shipping 160,000 tonnes worth over US$476 million. Although there was a 6.1% increase in quantity, the value experienced a slight dip of 1.4%.

The main categories of imported meat included poultry and offal, as well as fresh chilled or frozen pork and beef. Offal imports from pigs, buffaloes, and cows showed an upward trend, while imports of pork, poultry, and beef declined year on year.

In contrast, Vietnam's meat exports experienced growth, with over 22,000 tonnes valued at over US$110 million exported in 2023. This marked a 19% increase in volume and a notable 30.4% increase in value compared to the previous year.

Vietnam's meat and meat products found markets in 28 countries, with Hong Kong (China) being the largest consumer, followed by China, Belgium, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Cambodia, France, and the US
