British Poultry Council welcomes new CO2 agreement

The British Poultry Council welcomes the latest agreement that enables CF Industries' Billingham plant to operate with little-to-no compromise to food supply or bird welfare, the British Poultry Council reported.

The CF Industries' plant provides up to 60% of CO2 in the UK.

CO2 is used in the British poultry industry for stunning, packaging and refrigeration. Poultry production was affected when the plant was closed in September last year.

Richard Griffiths, British Poultry Council chief executive, said CO2 must be considered something of national interest, and the council has been working with the Government to avoid disruption in this area of the poultry supply chain.

Griffiths said the agreement enables the Billingham plant to operate as the industry faces high energy prices and food inflation.
