Dutch university starts two-year project to using enrichment materials on pig farms

Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands has started a two-year project - called "Pig Enrichment" - to promote the effective use of enrichment materials on more pig farms.

The use of enrichment materials in pens can prevent the occurrence of bored pigs engaging in tail biting. This understanding led to the development of the project that involves 24 pig producers and nine pig veterinarians who will acquire and share practical experience.

The project is divided into three study groups supervised by experts from Wageningen Livestock Research and Veterinair Kenniscentrum Oost Nederland (VKON). In each group, four thematic online discussions are organised, along with a webinar or seminar during which the different enrichment materials are discussed.
