Finland's self-sufficiency in meat falls last year

 

 

Finland's self-sufficiency rate in meat output fell to 97% in 2011, with production up 1% to 387 million kilogrammes while consumption rose 3% to 400 million kilogrammes, according to Gallup Food and Farm Facts.

 

The last time the figure was below 100% was in 2000. In 2011, pork consumption increased by about 5% to 196 million kilogrammes. Lamb consumption increased by 25%, turkey consumption by 3%, broiler consumption by 1%, and beef consumption by about 0.5%.

 

Pork production fell by about 1% to 201 million kilogrammes. Poultry production increased over 5%. Meat imports increased slightly, and imports accounted for 16% of consumption.

 

Gallup food and Farm Facts expects meat consumption to increase by about 2% in Finland to over 406 million kilogrammes in 2012. The self-sufficiency rate will fall to an estimated 95%.
