Ukraine to boost domestic poultry meat production by 30 percent this year

The Ukrainian poultry breeding industry plans to raise poultry meat sales by 150,000 tonnes in 2007, a 30-percent increase, Oleksandr Bakumenko, Ukrainian Poultry Breeders Union Chairman said in a report Monday.

This would enable the country to cease imports by 2008, he added.

Ukraine is also cranking up pork production, expecting sales to grow by 70,000 tonnes or 32 percent in 2007.

Serghiy Gnatuk, Corporation Tvarynprom Directors Board Chairman said the growth would be achieved through the multiple investment projects ongoing in the country.

Ukraine's poultry and pork sales grew at a similar clip last year, with pork production having risen by 68,000 tonnes (up 46 percent) while broiler production was up 124,000 tonnes (up 30 percent) over 2005.
