South African Poultry Association to cooperate with poultry market inquiry

The South African Poultry Association (Sapa) has pledged full cooperation with the poultry market inquiry initiated by the country's Competition Commission, South Africa's Freight News reported.
Asserting the significance of addressing issues surrounding the concentration of large companies in the broiler and egg sectors, Sapa seeks to provide insights into industry dynamics, growth factors, and challenges affecting production, employment, and profitability. The association addresses the misconception that it seeks bailouts, emphasising its stance on fair trade practices and protection against unfair imports.
Highlighting the competitive landscape, particularly against imports from countries like the US, Sapa underscores the importance of government support in curbing imports, combating illegal dumping, and fostering local industry growth as outlined in South Africa's 2019 Poultry Master Plan.
Addressing concerns raised by the inquiry, Sapa emphasises the industry's competitiveness globally while highlighting recent challenges such as rising feed costs and infrastructure shortcomings.
Despite being a major contributor to the agricultural sector, the South African poultry industry faced significant losses amid challenging conditions in the past year.
